The International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot Competition is a competition for law students, either undergraduate or postgraduate. Students from all countries are eligible and need not have received formal education in maritime law. The moot problem typically involves a commercial shipping dispute, which is to be determined by an arbitral panel according to the LMAA Terms, the MLAANZ terms or some other accepted set of arbitral rules. The problem is designed to incorporate difficult but practical issues of arbitration law as well as issues of substantive maritime law. The competition receives strong support from the judiciary and members of the legal, arbitration and maritime professions.
The Problem is distributed in early December via this website. Teams are to prepare memoranda for both Claimant and Respondent, due in about April. The oral arguments will usually take place in the Australasian or South East Asian region, in the last week of June or first week of July. The general rounds of the oral arguments take place at the Law Faculty of the host University on Saturday through Monday. The quarterfinal is held on Monday, the semi- final rounds are held on Tuesday and the final takes place on Tuesday evening and is followed by the awards function.
The competition is intellectually rigorous and enables students to explore the fascinating area of maritime law to a depth that would not otherwise be possible in their undergraduate degree. Many former maritime mooters have secured employment with firms specialising in this area. The competition also prides itself on being a friendly one; teams from overseas can be assured of a warm welcome and there are opportunities for socialising as well as mooting.
The 2010 International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot Competition will be organised by Murdoch University School of Law and hosted by the Faculty of Law, University of Technology Sydney.
