Murdoch University School of Law and Victoria University are proud to have hosted and organised the 8^TH annual IMLAM competition. The event was a great success, with a record 17 teams competing, including our first team from mainland China. The standard of the competition was extremely high. The students had clearly devoted an enormous amount of effort to their research and preparation, and their advocacy skills were admirable.

The grand final was held in the Federal Court of Australia before the Hon Justice James Allsop of the Federal Court, David Martin-Clark, a London Arbitrator, and Ron Salter, Arbitrator and Consultant to DLA Phillips Fox. The two teams who made it to the finals were Victoria University and Universitas Indonesia .

The winning team of the oral rounds was Universitas Indonesia.

A competition such as this cannot be run without significant support from the legal profession and the maritime industry. Thanks must go to the grand final panel, all the arbitrators for giving of their time so generously, the Federal Court for providing the grand final venue, the sponsors for providing the prizes to the teams, the student helpers who acted as timekeepers, and Victoria University School of Law, and particular Bruno Zeller, who organised the whole venue and pulled the whole event together in Melbourne. Finally, the event would not have run so smoothly without my Murdoch team of Dr Vernon Nase and Renae Barker, who travelled to Victoria with me, and Miriam Everall and Brigitte Russman from the School of Law office at Murdoch.

All of those people were integral to the success of the event.

In 2008, the Competition will return to Murdoch University School of Law in late June or early July. In 2009 we plan to hold the event in Asia.

2007 has certainly set a new standard of excellence in the standard of competitors; I am sure it will be exceeded in 2008!
