APIPLI Seminar on Global Patent Governance
Murdoch Law School’s Asia Pacific Intellectual Property Law Institute (APIPLI) held a Seminar on 15 April 2008 in the Freehills Lecture Theatre. APIPLI invited two academic lawyers from the Australian National University to give a lecture on the topic of Global Patent Governance. They were experts on intellectual property and the World Trade Organisation.
Dr Luigi Palombi is currently the head of the Genetic Sequence Right Project at the Australian National University. He discussed the Sovereign Effect of Patents: The Impact on Net Importers of Technology. Professor Peter Drahos is the Director of the Centre for the Governance of Knowledge and Development in the Regulatory Institutions Network at the ANU and also holds a Chair in Intellectual Property at Queen Mary College, University of London. He has published widely in law and social science journals and is internationally highly recognised for his work in this area. He discussed the topic of: Integration without Harmonization: Global Patent Administration. He examined the leadership of the Trilateral Patent Offices (the EPO, JPO and the USPTO) in the emerging global system of patent administration and the integration of developing country patent offices into this system. He also discussed Patent applications in a Developing Country Patent Office, Patent Cooperation Treaty (contracting parties), the countries without patent offices, and the Cost of Second Line Treatment. Approximately 70 people attended this Seminar, which was followed by light refreshments. The Law School also held a Reception in the Boardroom to thank Dr Luigi Palombi and Professor Peter Drahos for their contribution to APIPLI.
