Be a Law Student for a Day 2009

On Sunday the 3rd of May Murdoch University School of Law hosted 70 prospective law students for the day. This is part of the Be A Law Student for a Day program (BALSFAD). As usual the program was incredibly successful. Feedback from students was positive, with many students hoping to get accepted when the time comes.

The day started off with an introduction by Dean of Law, Professor Gabriël Moens. This was followed by an enthralling presentation on violent offenders by law lecturer Guy Hall. Following the mid morning break students received a presentation from Murdoch Student Law Society, on the fun, social side of University Life. Once the students had learnt all of the social events they will be able to attend they were informed of Murdoch Law School’s Community Legal Centre, the Southern Communities Advocacy Legal and Education Service, appropriately named SCALES for short. This gave the students an introduction to the practical experience they can receive while studying at Murdoch, not to mention the amount of people they can help in doing so.

The conclusion of the information session about SCALES heralded the arrival of the Moot Court Bench, for their first lecture for the day. They gave the students information about Mooting at Murdoch, as well as an introduction to the prospective student’s afternoon activity, participating in an actual moot.

Lunch was preceded by tours around the campus and then once the prospective students were recharged and ready to go they dived straight into their moots. The students presented compelling arguments and took to heart the messages about the art of persuasion delivered by Moot Court Bench Chief Justice, Fraser Robertson.
