The Dean’s Awards Ceremony, organised to celebrate the achievements of School of Law students, was held on Wednesday evening, 18 March 2009.
The Dean of Law, Professor Gabriël Moens, welcomed the assembled gathering of donor representatives, award winning students and their families, competition winners, Murdoch Student Law Society executive committee members and Law School staff.
Professor Moens acknowledged the generous support the School has received from the legal profession. He also noted the important contributions that the School of Law student societies made to the life of the University. The students honoured at the Dean’s Awards Ceremony are an example of the top quality students that the School of Law attracts.
The Francis Burt Chambers Law Medal, awarded for the most outstanding academic performance in Law, was presented to Jane Hook. The Dean praised Jane’s scholastic abilities and commented on the excellence of her grades throughout her studies at Murdoch University. In 2007, Jane received the Paterson and Dowding prize in Family Law as well as the Sarah Meddin Memorial Prize in Legal Theory. She was also awarded the Vice-Chancellor’s commendation for academic excellence in 2006 and 2007. The medal was presented to Jane by Terry Palmer, representing Francis Burt Chambers.
At the completion of the awards ceremony, guests were invited to socialise over drinks and cocktail food. The evening was also a good opportunity for students to meet and chat with members of the Law profession, academic staff and fellow students.
