Michael Barnes Wins Inaugural Torts Law Moot
Around 60 first year Law students competed in the inaugural Torts Moot culminating in a Final conducted in the Freehills Electronic Moot Court on Saturday 5th September, 2009.
The Torts Moot was an optional assessment item for Torts students with competitors guaranteed to compete in two rounds with feedback being given on performances provided by academic staff, Associate Justices from the Murdoch Moot Court Bench and mooting alumni. After the two rounds the highest placed students proceeded to quarter-finals, semi-finals and the Final.
The Final of this competition represented a culmination of many weeks of hard work on the part of the Murdoch Moot Court Bench which conducted a Mentor Breakfast (in which competing students were assigned mentors), and two seminars, one on written submissions and the other on oral submissions.
The finalists in the competition were Elizabeth Wreciovek, David Straface, Daniel Harrop and Michael Barnes. After a particularly high standard and hard fought final Michael Barnes was declared the winner. Presentations were made by the Dean of the Law School, Professor Gabriël Moens who praised the efforts of the students involved and commented on the high standard of the Final. He also congratulated the students serving on the Moot Court Bench who had worked extremely hard to ensure the success of the competition. The finals bench consisted of Dean Moens, Samantha Lord and Dr Vernon Nase, coordinator of the subject Torts.
