New SCALES intensive offered in Human Rights

Are you interested in International Human Rights?

This winter SCALES is offering an intensive clinical program which gives you the chance to immerse yourself in the world of international human rights.

Whether it is taking a case to the Human Rights Committee or examining the lawfulness of charging detainees detention costs. This unit will familiarise students with the International Human Rights System. It will explore and explain the Human Rights framework, looking at the legal instruments (and the rights they contain) the institutions (and the way they operate). It will also explore the interaction of domestic law with the international system and examine the reporting mechanisms, the role of NGOs and other specialist agencies.

Most importantly it will give students the opportunity to put it all into practice, as they work on real cases and issues using the international framework.

It will be taught over a two week period from the 14th until the 25th of July 2008. It will be taught at our Murdoch campus office. All day seminars will be run on Mondays of each week, while a close to full-time commitment will be necessary for the two weeks of the course.

This course is a clinical course which means that you will be continuously assessed on the work that you do for the cases you are working on. There is no exam and no paper to complete, you must however, be fully committed to progressing the cases you are working on.

If you are interested in enrolling please contact the course coordinator Anna Copeland at a.copeland@murdoch.edu.au
