Associate Professor Thomas Crofts

Associate Dean/Associate Professor

Associate Professor Crofts joined the School of Law in 2000. He is a graduate of University College London (LL.B.) and the Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg (LL.M.). He received his doctorate in law (Dr. iur.) from the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt/O., Germany. Prior to Murdoch Dr Crofts taught Law at the Bayerische Julius-Maximilians-University Würzburg (1993–1995) and the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder) (1995–1999). He has held visiting appointments at the Universities of Sheffield (2004) and Nottingham (2005 and 2006) and in 2008 he was appointed Visiting Fellow in the School of Law, Birmingham University.

Associate Professor Crofts teaches Criminal Law and Procedure, Criminal Law in WA, Advanced Criminal Law and Criminal Justice. At Birmingham University he teaches Homicide on the LLM in Criminal Law & Criminal Justice Programme and teaches in the Master of Criminal Justice Programme at the Crime Research Centre of the University of Western Australia. Associate Professor Crofts was awarded the Vice Chancellor’s Teaching Excellence Award in 2001 and in 2009. His research interests are comparative criminal law, criminalisation, criminal law reform and criminal responsibility. He has published in English and German in these fields in national and international journals. He is also the author of The Criminal Responsibility of Children and Young Persons in Germany and England and coauthor of the 6th edition of The Criminal Codes.
