Dr Vernon Nase

Senior Lecturer

Dr. Nase taught Aviation Law, International Air Law (Online course), Torts and European Union Law at the University of Queensland and Business Law at Griffith University (Gold Coast) prior to joining Murdoch Law School in January 2006. Dr. Nase received consecutive nominations for UQ's Excellence in Teaching Award between 2003 and 2005.

In 2006 Dr. Nase edited the Law School ’s Electronic Law Journal and was Academic Mentor to the Moot Court Bench, in addition to teaching the subjects Torts and Aviation Law and undertaking duties as coach of the Murdoch team competing in the 2007 Manfred Lachs International Space Law Mooting competition. Dr. Nase also had three articles published in leading international journals in 2006 and he wrote the Introduction to the Australian section of Space Law: Basic Legal Documents.

Dr. Nase serves as the Law School ’s representative on the University’s Academic Policy Committee and in the role of Associate Dean, Administration.

Mooting Activities

Dr. Nase, prior to joining The Murdoch Law School, achieved the following results:

  • Initiating University of Queensland involvement in two mooting competitions, the Torts Law Moot and the Manfred Lachs International Space Law Mooting Competition and coached UQ teams in each competition.
  • Coaching the UQ team that won the Torts Law Mooting Competition in 2004.
  • Coaching the UQ team that won Best Memorials in the Manfred Lachs International Space Law Mooting competition in 2005.
  • All UQ teams coached by Dr. Nase have qualified for the latter stages of their respective competitions.

In 2005 Dr Nase undertook the role of Director of Mooting Programmes at the University of Queensland . In 2005 UQ won:

  • Jessup International Law Moot – World Champions
  • International Online Arbitration Competition – World Champions
  • International Humanitarian Law Moot – Australian Champions
  • International Maritime Law Arbitration Competition – World Champions
  • Family Law Moot – Champions
  • Manfred Lachs Space Law Moot – Best Memorials Trophy and Semi-finalists
  • Sir Harry Gibbs Constitutional Law Moot – Winner Trophy for Highest Placed Team in Preliminary Rounds - Semi-finalist
  • Torts Law Moot – Finalists
  • World Negotiation Competition – Semi-finalists

At Murdoch University Dr. Nase is heavily in volved in the activities of the Law School ’s Moot Court Bench and po in ts to the many successes of the Moot Court bench dur in g its in augural year in 2006.

Research:

1. ADR and Air Law

  • Received Early Career Research Grant and completed research report (100 page report on both private and public international air law recourse to ADR techniques) [2002-2003]. Other ADR specific publications include articles in the World Arbitration and Mediation Report and several editions of the ADR Bulletin.
  • Currently engaged in research aimed at preparing a substantial publication to assist aviation lawyers in using ADR to resolve aviation disputes.

2. Aviation Security post September 11

  • Delivered the David Boughen Memorial Address at the Aviation Law Association of Australia and New Zealand (ALAANZ) Conference, (October 12-15, 2003) in part on the issue of Aviation Security.

3. Space Law

  • The Space Elevator concept – article researched and to be published in Zeitschrift Für Luft – Und Weltraumrecht (ZLW), the German Journal of Air and Space Law in 2006.

4. Air Carriers Liability

  • Dr. Nase has written several articles on the Montreal Convention on Air Carrier’s Liability. He is in the latter stage of completing his most recent article “Three steps forward, two steps back: reflections on air carriers’ liability and Montreal 99.”

5. The Cape Town Convention on International Interests in Mobile Equipment

  • Dr. Nase has co-presented a conference paper on this convention and has an article on the issue of Australia’s accession to the convention accepted by the Kluwer Journal of Air and Space Law for publication in early 2006.

6. Mental injury under the Warsaw/Montreal system

  • Dr. Nase is currently working on an article, to be co-authored with Dr. Chris Andrews on the issue of recovery for psychiatric injury under the Warsaw/Montreal Convention system.

7. Tort Law

  • As well as convening the course Torts B at the University of Queensland Dr. Nase also publishes in this area. His most recent publication, currently in press, is an article on the 2004 High Court of Australia decision in Woolcock Street Investments v CDG Pty Ltd (to be published in the October 2004 edition of the prestigious Torts Law Journal, edited by Professor Harold Luntz).
